What Date Night Taught Me About Sales

My wife and I both work hard, so every Thursday is date night.
It's our chance to disconnect from work, reconnect with each other, and unwind. We both look forward to it.
A few years ago, everyone was talking about a new taqueria that had just opened. We usually rotated through a handful of our favorite spots, but this place had a lot of buzz, and I wanted to see what all the excitement was about.
I also knew it would be packed.
So instead of leaving it to chance, I made a reservation in advance, picked a time that worked for both of us, checked the menu, figured out parking, and removed every bit of friction from the plan.
That's when it hit me… Sales works exactly the same way.
Selling isn't about convincing people in the moment. It's about doing the work beforehand so that when the moment arrives, saying "yes" feels like the obvious next step.
When you boil it down, sales is nothing more than creating value, solving problems, and helping people make better decisions.
You pay attention. You listen. You earn trust. You create value for the other person before expecting anything in return.
That's true in marriage, in friendships, and in business. Everything in life is a sale because every day you're asking someone to believe in you.
For me, sales is everywhere because every interaction is an opportunity to influence an outcome. And the people who create the most opportunities in life are the people who know how to tip the scales and influence outcomes.
That's why I always say: Everything in life is a sale.
Believing sales is simply closing deals, you're looking at the outcome instead of the process. Closing deals is how you make money.
But selling is really about understanding someone's problem so well that your solution becomes the obvious next step. That's a skill you'll use in every meeting, every negotiation, every interview, every presentation, and every relationship.
Master that, and you'll close far more than deals. You'll create opportunities.
You're learning how to build trust, know the value you bring so you can negotiate with confidence, communicate with clarity, and create opportunities where others see obstacles.
Those are skills that pay dividends for the rest of your life.
Your Challenge: For the next 48 hours, pay attention to every conversation. Ask yourself one question: "Am I trying to earn a Yes?" You'll see you're selling far more often than you think.
Then look at the outcome. If you got a "No," get curious. What did you miss?
